The Royal Society for the Promotion of Health Foundation Certificate in Health and Safety in the Workplace 9 Guided Learning Hours QCA Qualification Number 100/1901/7 Description: This qualification is designed to create a better understanding of Health and Safety. The emphasis is on making the employee safe for him/herself, safe for others and capable of identifying potential hazards. "Health and Safety" takes as its starting point the fact that most accidents are attributable to a lack of knowledge or carelessness and that the key to improvement is increased awareness on everybody's part. Summary of learning and Outcomes: To achieve this qualification a candidate must: 1. Define terms and systems relating to Health and Safety, by being able to: Outline the importance of Health and Safety to employers and employees Explain the role of personnel and systems in Health and Safety. Review legislation relating to Health and Safety. 2. Identify hazards in the workplace and state their possible effects, by being able to: Identify a range of hazards relating to environmental conditions Recognise hazards associated with use of equipment and machinery State the hazards and effects due to fire and electricity. 3. Outline methods for creating a safe working environment and dealing with incidents, by being able to: Describe procedures for creating a safe working environment Outline methods for dealing with incidents in the workplace. Assessment: Attainment of the Learning Outcomes will be assessed by an examination. The examination is in two parts: Part 1. A multiple choice test. Part 2. A hazard spotting exercise. Both parts of the assessment must be passed in order for a candidate to be awarded the certificate The multiple choice test and material for the hazard spotting exercise are provided by The Society. The multiple choice test consists of 20 questions and is of thirty minutes duration. Candidates must achieve a score of 14/20 in order to pass this element of the assessment. The hazard spotting exercise is fifteen minutes duration and requires candidates to correctly identify a hazard in 15 photographs of work situations. Candidates must correctly identify the hazard in 11/15 of the photographs in order to pass this element of the assessment. The hazard spotting exercise is marked by the centre, assessment sheets are forwarded to The Royal Society for the promotion of health for validating.
